Now that the economy is taking a bit of a hit, a lot less people are getting delivery, and a lot more are looking to Publix for local, fresh produce. Publix is stepping up to the plate, and doing more to improve their customer’s experience. They are now buying more produce from local markets in order to support local food industries and help the entire Gainesville community.

There’s a great post on Publix’s decision to buy locally on Jimmy Conner’s blog, here is an excerpt:

My local supermarket around the corner from my house, Publix, is a fine grocery chain with a fatal flaw.

Publix buys very little local produce and other perishable products and, more often than not, ships all these goods to my store in Gainesville, Florida from points in the US as far away as California. As I have mentioned before, I am amazed to regularly see California produce in my Publix that was shipped across country at enormous expense in fuel and to my modest financial resources.

Seeing California citrus in my Publix’s produce section during prime Florida citrus season really sets me off. It is an astonishing waste of fuel and an insult to Floridians by a homegrown, Florida-based company. It is not enough for Publix to be a homegrown Florida company. they need to buy locally too.

The August 6, 2008 edition of the New York Times has an article entitled, Supermarket Chains Narrow Their Sights by Marian Burros (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/06/dining/06local.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&ref=dining. I highly recommend Burros’ article and hope that higher ups at Publix will take heed to the message that Burros delivers.

Shopping markets are increasingly facing competition from convenience stores, major Super-Walmarts and even other supermarkets. A new supermarket is emerging with a competitive edge in their product mix. They are catering to immigrants with unique ethnic choices and they’re seeing great results.

Trays of beef soup, stuffed chiles and pupusas tantalize the lunch rush at the Supermercados Teloloapan taqueria.

Stacks of fresh tortillas, sandwich bread known as bolillos and sugar-topped sweet breads fill the bakery of the Gulfton-area store. In the butcher’s department, chicken feet, cow tongue and tripe line the display case.

What you won’t find here is the organic produce, soy milk or fresh eclairs sold in the international aisles of some of the big chains.

Neighborhood stores like Teloloapan, La Michoacana Meat Market and Matamoros Meat Market stock their shelves with items that can complete an immigrant’s shopping list.

An excerpt from the story below:

“They know they have to give them what they are looking for, or else they will lose them to a store that is catering to them,” said Lorrie Griffith, editor of the Shelby Report, a Gainesville, Ga.-based publication that follows the grocery business.

Add that marketing smarts to the fact that Harris County’s immigrant population continues to swell, and it’s not difficult to see why these stores have grown into chains in their own right.

Teloloapan, for example, runs nine stores; La Michoacana owns more than 100 in the state; and Matamoros has 11 franchises.

“They’re the logical extension of the development we’re having through immigration,” Nestor Rodriguez, a University of Houston sociologist, said about the growth of the bodegas and supermercados.

I wanted to revisit the Gainesville Food Drive that took place last month and congratulate everyone on their hard work. Everyone pitched in and even the postal workers were collecting food from mailboxes.

The Gainesville Sun covered the story here, read a quick exceprt and head to the Gainesville Sun for the full article:

Today, anyone with a mailbox can be a humanitarian.

Those who want to help fight hunger in the area need not trek to local food pantries or soup kitchens to do their part. Instead, they can just leave donations of nonperishable foods in a bag at the mailbox today.

In the 16th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, Gainesville mail carriers will pick up donations of nonperishable food items from local mailboxes today to deliver to the Chattahoochee Baptist Association’s Good Samaritan Food Ministry.

The nationwide food drive comes at the perfect time of year for area food banks, when the need is greater and the donations are smaller, said Natasha Daniels, public relations manager for the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

“We’re going into what is known as ‘summer hunger,’” Daniels said.
